If you’ve heard of The Salads you may know they put out their latest album titled “The Big Picture” in May of ’06. And if you are a fan you may be up to date on the latest reviews about this album. Pop Journalism posts their review on October 22nd stating, “The Salads have a knack for writing some catchy melodies, but on The Big Picture, they may have alienated old fans just to adhere to rock radio standards and generic-sounding tracks.”
Now the cool part about this story is that The Salads were here a week before their release date recording an interview and acoustic style songs for our podcast. Have a listen.., you tell me, is this a valid criticism by our friends at Pop Journalism or do you think that the band is simply evolving?

I think that alot of bands like people we change over time, we are constantly growing and learning about life, different opportunities arise at different times and maybe they didn't have the same opportunities that they have now previously. For example the salads may have gotten to work with different producers, and different people in industry that may have helped them achieve the goals that they wanted to with the band and the new album.
I think that The Salads are just simply evolving and becoming better at what they do.

They're just saying that because Fold A to B was such a hard record to top. It's the same with every band whose first big record is a hit- the anticipation is so great that nothing they release can possibly make everyone happy.
Of course it's hard to approach any album without prior prejudices, but people are writing off The Big Picture too easily. Anybody who takes time to listen to it will see it's not just another modern rock toss-off. Serious effort has gone into these songs, even if they take a little longer to get into.

The band kept working on this record until we were 100% with every song. Fold A to B was fun but not every track kills. Only a handful. Big Picture was great for us all the way through. For us, our best work ever. We feel they are the best songs we have written in our 20 years together. btw: we have 3 releases prior to Fold A to B.

Oh man...Chuck...I have to disagree with the handful comment. (Just because I can since I'm a fan.)
Seriously dude...way more than a handful! jeez.
Anyway, Big Pic is not a generic rock album; it was natural growth of an artist. A to B was a smashup of many genres, and simply because this album happens to stay within one or two genres that makes it generic?
No.
Incorrect.
The album was a perfect next step i-m-o, and there's virtually nothing I'd want to be different about the disc.
It's been months since the release, and I'm still listening to it as if I just got it in my possession.

I have been a Salads fan more a long time and I don't agree. To compare The Big Picture to Fold A to B, is pointless. Compare Fold A to B to Who's That? Or Who's That to Meanwhile, they are all drastically different. That is the beauty of The Salads, they don't do the same thing over and over. However, I can see that because The Big Picture is maybe not as multi-genre spanning, an undeveloped musical ear may consider this to be generic, I just see it as a focus. This time around they focused on that sound. Next time, who knows? Jazz inspired metal ska? With these guys, nothing is impossible. Keep doing what yo do!

Why anyone would criticise any band for doing something a little different makes no sense to me. People crave variety especailly musical people, you need to keep things interesting or it just gets stale.
Alienated old fans?? Hardly, I think it's the old fans that loved The Big Pictutre the most. It was growth and those that have watched the band evolve can appriciate the songs for what they realy are, a sort of look into the inner soul of the band.
If you want to put a down fall on the Big Picture I would say it's not long enough but hey the hard work was there and the fans are here to!!!
