Do you use an iPod? Aren't they everywhere? Do you use the iTunes music store? If you use iTunes's encoder to rip your music, or you purchase music from the iTunes music store, then your files are in AAC format, which is a closed system that only works with iTunes. Windows has it's own WMA format, which won't work with iPods or Macs. How about an open standard? What are your thoughts?

there is the ogg vorbis lossy format, and the flac losseless format which are open source and DRM free.
a new emerging media player called Songbird will allow the user to use any store they want to purchase music from. Check it out at http://www.songbirdnest.com

I'm even happy with mp3 as a digital format. Though it isn't open source, it's very compatible, the quality is generally acceptable and it's DRM free.

I think Ipods and MP3 player are great tiny toys. I can't get into the speaker ports with little tiny speakers. We need to bring back big stereo speakers and systems to shake ,rattle and roll.

MP3 is the way to go for me. And there are sites popping up that will sell you DRM-free MP3s. I use eMusic which is fantastic if you're not the "Top 40" type of personality. A lot of notable Canadian bands are offering MP3s for sale there including my current favourites, Broken Social Scene.

I think ipods are great mp3 players as you can add as many songs as you want, depending on the space, and you don't have to keep updating it because you can basically put every cd you own on it.

Well, I've finally joined the iPod crowd. It was a present, ok? It's certainly great to have a whole bunch of your music in one spot, but the thought of ripping CDs to mp3 (320 kbps) so that they can stream from the iPod to FM through the iTrip to listen to them in the car, when I could just listen the CD instead- that just seems a little crazy.
