Women in the Recording Industry

Playback published an article today about an open letter written by Quebec directors criticizing the industry for shutting women out of film making. While women do have opportunities to make films, the letter states, female directors are often saddled with lower budgets than their male colleagues. While this article focuses on the film industry, it made me reflect on the position of women in the recording industry.

I'm studying Radio and Television amongst a student population of more women than men, but in the audio stream, the ratio is reversed. Why is this? Certainly one reason is that there are few female role models in the industry. I look up to producers like Dave Fridmann and Nigel Godrich, but can't think of any female producers of that stature. As for the root causes of this problem, I can't say for sure, but it certainly is a problem. Why is our industry so behind the times in this regard? Most importantly, what can be done about it?

Band names

How hard is it to pick a band name? Really hard. I think we need some new words too. Do you like Wolf Parade? Or was it Wolfmother. No, it was Mice Parade, or Modest Mouse, or Mouse on Mars. Deerhoof. Deerhunter. Serena Maneesh. (ok, I guess that's pretty original.)

There is a common theme here - just seemingly random words stuck together. So, I headed on over to Band Name Maker for some help. Here's what I got:

Fractured Dummy
Symbol of the Hydro Tiger
Trusting Pickle
Auto Bite
Injected Stingray and the Seeing Scooper
Adopted Farmer
Wound Lingo of the Going Hallucination
Diving Pickle
Malevolent of the Trusty
Quivering Treasure

The next record by Wound Lingo of the Going Hallucination should be pretty good!

On a related note, check out Rhapsody's recent post about the proliferance of exclamation points in band names, presumably in an effort to one-up the barrage! of! similar! sounding! names!

Digital music sales in decline?

Thanks to Jack for this post. USA Today writer Andrew Kantor comments on reports that digital music sales are in decline. He denies that digital sales are dropping, citing a Nielson SoundScan report that claims digital sales have grown 67% from 2005, but points out that digital music sales are still a drop in the bucket compared to CD sales and to online piracy.

He goes on to state that the reason that piracy is so common is not simply that people don't want to pay for music, but rather that they want to have control over the music they pay for. Kantor compares the use of DRMs and proprietary formats to the early days of the recording industry when companies used record formats that were only compatible with specific players. The result of which, he claims, was poor sales.

There are some services, he writes, that offer digital music sales without copy control measures, but the major labels have not signed on to these services.

What do you think? Are DRMs and other copy-control methods necessary for the industry to protect itself? Or would opening up to DRM-free formats increase the viability of online music sales as a major form of revenue?

ipod and itunes

Do you use an iPod? Aren't they everywhere? Do you use the iTunes music store? If you use iTunes's encoder to rip your music, or you purchase music from the iTunes music store, then your files are in AAC format, which is a closed system that only works with iTunes. Windows has it's own WMA format, which won't work with iPods or Macs. How about an open standard? What are your thoughts?

Harmed Canadian Artists

Did you know that Canadian artists account for roughly 23 percent of the Canadian market? Did you know that the annual royalty loss attributable to music downloading in Canada is about $540,000 (12 per cent of $4.5 million)? With this being said it’s easy to say very few bands become substantially successful in Canada. With the Canadian recording industry sustaining significant financial losses in recent years due to decreased music sales how do you feel about getting your music out there? The music industry in Canada has always been tough to break, would you say it’s even tougher now? You can find an in depth story on the decline of music sales in Canada through CRIA. The losses have materially harmed Canadian artists.

Information for this post was derived from the CRIA website as well as The Star, Michael Geist, Canada’s Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law at the University of Ottawa

The Salads with The Big Picture

If you’ve heard of The Salads you may know they put out their latest album titled “The Big Picture” in May of ’06. And if you are a fan you may be up to date on the latest reviews about this album. Pop Journalism posts their review on October 22nd stating, “The Salads have a knack for writing some catchy melodies, but on The Big Picture, they may have alienated old fans just to adhere to rock radio standards and generic-sounding tracks.”

Now the cool part about this story is that The Salads were here a week before their release date recording an interview and acoustic style songs for our podcast. Have a listen.., you tell me, is this a valid criticism by our friends at Pop Journalism or do you think that the band is simply evolving?
